Review: Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica

Pretty Baby by Mary Kubica
Publisher: MIRA (Harlequin UK)
Release date: 13 August 2015
Rating:*****
Back cover blurb: A chance encounter. She sees the teenage girl on the train platform, standing in the pouring rain, clutching an infant in her arms. She boards a train and is whisked away. But she can't get the girl out of her head... An act of kindness. Heidi has always been charitable but her family are horrified when she returns home with a young woman named Willow and her baby in tow. Dishevelled and homeless, this girl could be a criminal - or worse. But despite the family's objections, Heidi offers them refuge. A tangled web of lies. As Willow begins to get back on her feet, disturbing clues into her past starts to emerge. Now Heidi must question if her motives for helping the stranger are unselfish or rooted in her own failures.

Although I enjoyed Mary Kubica’s debut novel ‘the Good Girl’ I think I enjoyed ‘Pretty Baby’ more. Mary Kubica is definitely an author that I want to read more of.

Heidi is a naturally caring Woman, she wanted a large family, but circumstances meant she only had one daughter, Zoe, she now gives her life to helping others and wants to help the young girl that she sees every morning at Fullerton station, but she doesn’t know quite how to approach her, until one day she offers to buy her dinner at a local diner.

At first the girl refuses, evidently suspicious of Heidi and her motives. But soon enough, she is joining Heidi in the diner where she has been impatiently awaiting her arrival. Before she knows what is happening the young girl finds herself living with Heidi, her husband Chris and their daughter Zoe.

Both Chris and Zoe are resentful of 'Willow' coming in to their lives and taking up their wives/mother's precious time. But Willow needs Heidi more than she would care to admit, and vice versa.

Pretty Baby is a gripping, thought provoking novel with intense characters and a sometimes uncomfortable plot that is necessary to evoke the readers emotions. I can't wait to read the next Mary Kubica!

Pretty Baby is available to buy now from Amazon online and all good book shops.
